Let Them Worry About It

Feeding the Leisure Horse by David Mathers

Back in the 1950’s SPILLERS® developed the first ever fully balanced compound feed, the famous Horse & Pony Cube. Since then many things have changed:
  • Pippa Funnell has won Badminton three times.
  • N. Ireland has managed to beat England at Football.
  • SPILLERS® has joined Effem Equine Ltd and are owned by the Mars Corporation.
  • Racing, Stud and Competition yards have the luxury of a feed made specifically for them, and now have full ranges of feed to choose from.

One thing that has remained the same is the basic recipe for reliable and effective Horse & Pony Cubes. Whilst High Digestible Fibre (HDF) has been added to provide sustainable cool energy, Horse & Pony Cubes have remained a firm favourite for all Leisure Riders.

Some people are under the illusion that feeds with lower performance requirements do not have the same technology behind them that feeds for top athletes do. This could not be further from the truth as Effem Equine Ltd ensures that all their feeds have a similar level of research as their basis. We all know how important our health is, and that of our much loved animal is just as important.

The care and thought that goes into developing the nutritional balance for a feed such as SPILLERS® Senior Maintenance or Senior Conditioning is unsurpassed as it is the only feed on the market with added Glucosamine for joint support coupled with Yeasacc1026 for digestive support, additional Vitamin B as the older horse often does not produce enough, Vitamin E for immune system support, Soya oil for coat condition and even smaller particle size for easier chewing for the older horse. A similar list exists for Happy Hoof for Laminitis, Conditioning Cubes or Mix for weight gain or Meadow Herb for fussy eaters.

As a premium brand many people believe SPILLERS® to be expensive, and whilst the actual bag price is often a little dearer, using a quality product can often save you money. In trials equines fed as little as 2kg of SPILLERS® Cool mix a day (a reduction in their normal daily feed intake) improved in condition and temperament in as little as six weeks. The bag price might be higher but the weekly cost is often similar or even lower and more importantly the nutritional value is high quality and suited to its purpose. In order for your horse or pony to be at optimum health where they can fight off illness and be fully fit for their purpose, it is important that you feed a balanced diet with appropriate fibre, starch, energy and vitamin and mineral levels. Sometimes it can be difficult to balance our own diets, never mind being unsure as to whether we are feeding our feeding our four-legged friends the right thing! SPILLERS® has years of experience and has carried out all the research, let them worry about it!
