Thompson's range of beef feeds
are based on technical research to
meet all on-farm situations.
Strong framed animals of high
growth rates are required to meet
some market outlets. Beef animals
must achieve not only a high daily
liveweight gain but also a carcase
capable of achieving the top
greades for conformation and fat
class. On other farms where native
beef breeds are used, a more
steady growth rate is necessary
under less intensive production
systems.

| SUCKLER
COW AND CALF FEEDS |
The number of
suckler cows has increased
markedly over the last number of
years. This has been in response
to the positive encouragement
given by the EU in the form of
support measures for suckled calf
production. However, to further
improve the profitability of
suckled calf production, farmers
must not depend solely on subsidy
payments. When analysing gross
margin data it is clear that the
single most important factor
affecting profitability with
suckler cows is the ability to
produce a strong, healthy suckled
calf per cow per year.
