Providing Solutions for a New Era
The Mid-Term review of the CAP has cast a new light on dairying in Northern Ireland as is the case in the rest of the U.K. Key questions have now been put forward to both our industry as a whole and also to individual dairy farmers as the best pathway to move forward on. Many are taking this path and are aware of how to address these posed questions; the challenge now is to achieve!
Future progression in our industry will be dictated by farm profitability and achieving performance targets in ALL areas of the business. In order to maximise on-farm profits, and although individual situations may vary, there are certain fundamental issues that cannot be neglected; the increase of milk yields, the improvement of milk quality, the need to reduce lameness and also to improve herd fertility,
Alongside these issues is the need to reduce the cost of heifer rearing, reduce mortality in young calves and improve dry cow management. These are not new concepts, but they will be the key drivers to profitable milk production in the new de-coupled scenario.
These are needs which John Thompson & Sons Ltd has recognised as being central to the future profitability of Northern Ireland dairy farms. If Northern Ireland Dairy farmers could bring the compositional quality of their milk up to the average of the other European countries it would bring a further £13million into their pocket and a possible £10 million into the milk processing industry.
Innovative local research and the incorporation of unique specialist products into the range of dairy and youngstock rations continues to be the cornerstone of the business in the drive for improved performance and profitability at farm level. |
