Grass is a valuable resource on
Northern Ireland Dairy Farms. However
there is a wide range in the performance
achieved from grass. For best results a
dense leafy sward of PRG/tetraploid/clover
must be available throughout the grazing
season. This must be coupled with
effective utilisation, sward management
and fertiliser policy to ensure a
continuous supply of quality grass.
The target feeding of concentrates
during the grazing season has a key role
to play in helping farmers unlock the
potential of grass. Concentrate feeding
assists in balancing variable grazing
conditions, high grass protein levels
and the significant mineral imbalance in
grass.
